Full Description

A possible floodbank. The excavation in May 1967 by M Ponsford revealed 3 parallel lines of wooden piles (of quartered tree trunks) driven into the gravel. Alternating layers of brushwood, clay and sand lay between the piles above the gravel. The whole structure was c 20ft in width and orientated NE- SW. It was apparently destroyed by an old water course. In the silt of this water course and lying above the piles was a fragment of lead window kame. Another more fragmentary alignment lay further SE, orientated NW-SW. (1)
