Full Description

In 1839, at 18 miles from Leicester, 3 skeletons were found within 100yds of each other, and a fourth 1/4 mile distant. They were burials in the actual line of the road in graves dug through the gravel and rubble of the road to the rock at a depth of 2ft. 2 spears were found with each burial, with iron heads, 8in-16in long. Ro coin accompanying one burial indicates that they are not earlier than C4. (1)
A Mr Lewin of Cotgrave (aged 87 in 1950) could remember speaking to the Rev Archdeacon Browne who found these articles. (5)
Mr Houldsworth stated that the siting of these burials was based only on the mileage given from Leicester. The finds were in the possession of the Rev Browne and items from this collection are now in the BM (see OS 63 NW 11) but nothing identifiable as from Cotgrave. (6) (7)
Centred at above grid ref - from info in (1) at the 18th milestone from Leicester. (8)
See L8014 for Ro coin, L953 for Pa Flint.
