Full Description

About a mile farther (from Margidunum) is a tumulus upon an eminence of the road beyond Bingham Lane (ie roughly above grid ref). (Engraving, titled "a prospect of Ad Pontem (actually Margidunum) upon the eminence a mile south on the Fosse Sep 7 1722", shows a mound in the centre of the Fosse Way). (1)
This location coincides also with a deviation in the modern course of the Fosse Way to the W ... This could have arisen from the need to circumnavigate the mound. The name "Moothouse Pit" nearby indicates a late Anglo-Saxon meeting place at a mound or on a hill ... it is possible that the mound identified by Stukeley was used for this purpose. (3)
In Stukeley's engraving (1) the mound sits on top of the road and therefore it must post-date the Roman period and if the name 'Moothouse Pit' does refer to the moot in the pit near the barrow/hill (3), then this places the mound firmly within the Early Medieval period. It seems likely therefore that it would have been a burial mound. (4)
See M809 for Moothouse Pit, L1012 for part of Fosse.
