Full Description
6 - A structure approx 2m wide was observed for a length of only 4m. 2 rows of 10-12cm diameter quartered ash posts, originally vertical, had been driven in to the lowest layer of the gravel. Between the posts were slotted horizontal, round section rods of 3-5.5cm diameter. The ash posts had been pushed over downstream in a NE direction during the destruction of the structure by flooding, so that some were nearly horizontal and many were missing. On the NW frontage, 26 Keuper waterstone slabs had been laid as a carefully constructed pavement on the bed of the ancient river, only 30cm above the floor of the gravel pit, probably to prevent erosion around the posts. The orientation of nearby logs suggests that this structure was nearly parallel with the course of the ancient river and its construction is so similar to that of 7 and 8 that it is probably contemporary with them and had the same function (see M965 and M966). It lies 50m from the main deposit of "stoers". (1)
