Full Description
7 - A structure over 38m long, 1.7m wide was made of quartered ash poles 20cm in diameter and 80cm apart in 4 rows. Slotted obliquely between the posts were willow rods or faggots of round section, 6-7cm diameter, lying horizontally to form a single herring bone pattern with the V pointing S. The posts had been driven into the bottom of a trench dug into the bed of the ancient river in the lowest layers of the gravel. The orientation of nearby logs suggest that this structure was nearly parallel to the course of the ancient river. Its function was probably that of a staunch, an oblique jetty used to narrow and deepen the river for navigation. (1)
