Full Description

3 circular timber huts and a complex of drainage gullies were revealed in a rescue excavation in 1970. The area, centred at above NGR, covers over 4 acres, and is considered to be a small peasant holding occupied mainly 250- 400 AD. Finds other than pottery were meagre. (1)
Site one contained the densest concentration of features including the foundation trench of a circular hut 7.5m in diameter (Hut 1) and a curving gully which may represent another hut (Hut 3). Other features include trenches of which one contained four post holes and has been interpreted as being the remains of a fenced enclosure along with various pits and gullies. Abundant quantities of Roman pottery were found in the vicinity of the two huts, the bulk of it dating from the late 3rd and 4th centuries AD. A smaller complex of features was identified and examined some 60m east of site 1. They included the foundation trench of a hut 9.4m in diameter (Hut 2). Other features include several gullies of various lengths and depths. Pottery from the environs of this hut, though largely unstratified, points to a date in the late 3rd century or early 4th century for the occupation.
One coin of the reign of Constantine I was recovered (c.330-335 AD) along with a finely finished rectangular palette in while marble, of a type normally associated with the preparation of drugs or cosmetics. (2)
The plan of the settlement falls into 2 parts, that on the W being the larger and the most dense. 2 of the huts were on this site, the other on site 2. There were no post holes, each having a shallow foundation trench (sic). Such posts as were used were no doubt supported on stones.
No APs of this area available. (3)
The excavations were carried out prior to open cast gypsum mining. (4)
