Full Description

Deserted Med village of Horsepool at SK 706478 (refers to excavation in 1948 by C Coulthard, but this was at Castle Hill). (1)
Forms of "Coneygre", the nearby farm, appear from 1536, suggesting the existence of rabbit warrens in the area, which could have become integrated with the village site. (2)
One of the mounds on the E side of the field was excavated --/08/1949 by HO Houldsworth. Med sherds (c 1200- 1300) were found in the upper levels ... Also a trial trench across the sunken road which found only Ro material --/02/1950 ... (Houldsworth considers the site to be that of "Horspol" mentioned in DB). (3) (4)
AP's show an area of irregular mounds (at above grid ref), surrounded by ridge and furrow, with a sunken road passing through it. (5)
Remains of stone lined well, green glazed pottery (now in possession of owner of land). (6)
This area has been extensively quarried by Hoveringham Gravel Co to a working depth of c 4m. The Estate Office have no knowledge of archaeological finds from this region. Houldsworth ((3) and (4)) has no longer an archaeological interest and was not contacted. (8)
See L9570 for Ro Pot, M 17558 for rabbit warrens, M 17559 for well, M 1776 for alternative site, L 9571 for C13 masonry, L 9572 for sluice.
