Full Description

Site of a C2 Ro villa (corridor type). The material in its foundations was used to construct farm roads in 1886, but a ground plan drawn at this time is in the possession of TC Blagg. (No evidence is available for the date of the villa). (1) (2)
Set in permanent pasture at SK 71954249 is the robbed site of the villa. It sits at the top of a slight rise above the river plain facing almost due S. The 2 wing rooms, the corridor and at least 3 of the rear rooms are clearly visible giving nearly the whole outline. (3)
Site of the small canton-type villa of Car Colston. The main building is a single (sic) type of structure with corner rooms linked by a passage and rooms leading off to the hall (behind it). At present lies under pasture in an area of Med ridge and furrow. No excavation recorded; the site is still shown as slight earthworks. (6)
The last remaining stones were robbed to the foundations in 1886, leaving depressions in the ground along the wall lines. The height of the ground within the walls suggests that floor layers may survive…. A corridor or vernadah is aligned E-W 3.6m wide and c 24m long. N of this is a range of rooms, from the E 5.7m, 3.3m and 5.2m wide respectively. The fourth room is 5.8m wide. In the front of the building two larger rooms project from the end of the corridor. Both were probably 7.1 by 7.8m so as to give a symmetrical façade. (9)
The earthworks that remain are said to be the result of late C19 stone robbing - ie walls have been robbed out and trenches left creating an inverted site. (10)
Morph: 213.12.1 Roman villa. (11)
NGR given is OS version. See L1467, L1468 for nearby finds, L2953 for Med earthworks and cross refs, L7773 for nearby earthworks.
