A Ro building or native settlement site is indicated by finds of Ro pottery, tiles and much stone, on the bank of Car Dyke at above grid ref. (No cropmarks visible on available APs - RAF 1948, 1950.) (1)
Possibly the site of a Ro villa. At least one stone building recognised. (2)
Local enquiries established the indicated site as correct, but this was under barley when visited, and the banks of the Car Dyke are heavily grassed. The adjacent fields are all clear of crop but only a single rim sherd of Ro grey ware was found at SK 7263 4176. (3)
Immediately W of scatter is a 50yd length of ditch, 15-20ft wide, running N- S. (4)
Fieldwalking identified a concentration of Roman material on field 5877. A cursory inspection of the rest of the field revealed a similar scatter of stonework, pottery and tile (including box flue tile) extending to the W boundary of the field and at least into the margins of the next, an extent of some 150m. Topsoiling and excavation revealed ditches and other structures with pottery and other Ro finds. Several pieces of flue tile and tegula were discovered supporting the impression that the Ro building would have been of some substance. The main focus would appear to be late C2 - early C3, with diminished activity extending into C4. (5)
