Full Description

The earthwork remains today as a shallow depression round three sides of the present farm buildings. There is no visible remnant of any internal bank with the possible exception of a small mound in the angle where the moat turns SE… Ridge and furrow has to all appearances destroyed the whole of the SE boundaries of the enclosure… One of the trenches was run to the inner lip of the ditch. It is suggested that the evidence points to the former existence of a low inner bank. (1)
The site is definitely suited to that of a hill-top camp. The old field name for the area is "Borough Wong". (2)
Suggested to be an IA hillfort, in a group of 5 in a distance of 8 miles. The pottery from the lower levels of the excavation is certainly of IA character, but has no distinctive features to allow a date to be suggested or parallels quoted. (3)
The earthwork at Burton Lodge is classified as a univallate hillfort with "V" shaped ditch containing a slotted channel. (4) (5)
See M8199 for interpretation as Med moated site.
