Full Description

A large mound in a prominent position on Gibbet Hill, shown on a map of c 1600 AD with the symbol of a gallows, was partially excavated by TS in 1968. Its use as a motte was precluded by the absence of a surrounding ditch and of any Med pottery; Ro pottery beneath shows it was not a BA barrow. It was assumed that the feature was a gallows mound from the beginning. 23m x 20m x 1.5m high. (1)
See L 8235 for Ro pottery, L 8236 for Preh finds.
