Full Description
Civil War defence mound 30yds W of church. (1)
The mound is without doubt a gun position of the Civil War period. It is of horse-shoe shape, facing the lane to the ferry. It may have been an outer defence to Shelford Manor. (2)
When the Parliamentary forces occupied Shelford village in 1645, they were fired on by snipers from the church tower - no mention of earthwork. (3)
Earthwork correctly described and classified by (2). It is located in the graveyard of the church but has not been mutilated by grave digging. At no point does the maximum height of the rampart exceed 0.6m. (5)
See L 5463 for burial, L 7669 for bank.
