Full Description

APs show traces of earthworks near Margidunum to the SW (ill, (2) 8616). They appear as 3 parallel banks. Although under plough, examination of the surface yielded no evidence of date. (1)
Between Newton Lane and road to Gunthorpe 2 parallel features. Earlier photos show squared end, and two features running into it (of different character). (5)
An AP in (4) shows a pair of parallel ditches, some 150ft or more apart, running E-W on the rising ground 200 yds to the SW of Margidunum. A more recent AP by Pickering reveals these 2 ditches in greater clarity and adds the detail that their E ends are linked by a cross ditch at right angles to them. The W end of this complex cannnot be traced, either on the AP or on the ground, but it is certain that the parallel pair extend for at least 300ft from E to W. This earthwork resembles a cursus more than any other class of monument. (6)
This feature is now under deep plough and no surface remains are identifiable. Prof Todd remains firm in his conviction that this is a cursus. (7)
See L8260 for Ro finds, L1826 for nearby flints.
