Full Description

There was a small Elizabethan hall in brick, built by the Scroops as a dower house to Langar, of which there are no remains. The Howes … dismantled the place. The late Thomas Huskinson restored the place, built the main block of the house [and] the stone gateway and walls. Sir Francis Ley built the library wing and kitchen. (1)

The present fabric of Epperstone Manor is almost entirely C19/C20 incorporating an earlier house in the NE corner. Adjacent to the C17 dovecote is a buttressed gateway of red sandstone with a perpendicular 4 centred arch surmounted by a decorative dripstone inscribed with a Lombardic "H" - refers to Howes family. (4)
House. Mid C18, 1866, 1876 and 1893. Some of the panelling [in the] entrance hall [is] C17. (5)
Epperstone Manor is the successor to a series of earlier dwellings which probably stood on or close to the site. In its present form it contains the substantial remains of a late C17 or early C18 double-pile house which was considerably altered and extended in 1867 and again in about 1894. It also contains reset panelling and fireplaces of about 1600, some reset C18 fireplaces, and a great deal of high-quality decorative detail dating from the two major C19 building campaigns. Subsequent alteration has been limited and chiefly cosmetic in character. (6)
See M5454 for dovecote, L1832 for nearby moat.
