Full Description
Lowdham Old Hall, the traditional name of which is Broughton Hall, is probably early C17. It contains early bricks and an early C17 chimney stack. There are remains of pargetting. (1)
A gabled C16 or early C17 building, half timbered. Old oak staircase. (2)
A free, manorial chapel at Lowdham is mentioned in 1546. (3)
The owner of the hall, Col JG Trotter, has no knowledge of a domestic chapel attached to, or included in the building. The chapel refered to might possibly be a forerunner to the present church. (5)
Mid-C17, timber-framed under the plaster, which on the N side has a fishscale pattern. In the wing, a contemporary staircase with flat balusters. Lengthened in the C18. (6)
Lowdham Old Hall. Extensively sampled in main body of building. Tree ring estimate of date: 1652. (7)
House and attached barn and wall. Late C16, early C17, mid C18 and C19. House, render over red brick and timber frame, shallow rubble plinth in parts. (8)
13 timber core samples taken from the house in 1991 and analysis produced a felling date of 1652. (9)
15 samples were taken from the barn in 1996 and analysis produced a felling date of c.1541. (10)
The C17 section of the house is entered through the open porchway with ovolo pattern moulded frame and then through the main door which is original…constructed of oak planks, two layers in depth, with the outer planks being vertical and those behind horizontal. They are fastened together with numerous hand-made, stud head nails. The door is secured with hook and band hinges with a fleur-de-lys pattern… The latch on the door at the Old Hall is stamped PB for Peter Broughton for whom the house was built. The lock on the door is thought to be an early replacement and is a C17 Banbury pattern lock and is stamped with the initials P and A for Peter and Anne Broughton following his marriage to Anne Staunton in 1656. Stripping away of damaged C19 plaster in the dining room revealed the oak posts and studs of the original outer walls of the house. Part of this outer wall now forms one side of the pantry and here remains a small section of the original outer plasterwork finish of the house – fishscale pargetting which is a rarity in Nottinghamshire. 3-storey C17 open-well oak staircase.
