Full Description

EE chancel arch on Norman shafts. Norman panels (mostly on the second floor of the tower) representing occupations through the year, probably former part of the W door of the Norman tower. The nave and tower were largely rebuilt in 1760-3, using the old stone. The chancel was rebuilt about 1835, and the whole restored in 1881. (1)
Reused Norman masonry includes a series of representations of the months. (2)
The Norman carvings were probably part of an early C12 doorway. (3)
A church at Calverton mentioned in DB. (5)
Earlier this century the main street had been straightened where it curved to circumvent the graveyard of the parish church, St Wilfreds [sic]. This entailed the reduction of the raised graveyard level. …(In trench for sewer pipe) a single (adult?) was revealed when a manhole shaft was cut. 4m to the W a triple burial deposit was encountered. (6)
Although containing fragments of eleventh century carved stone, St. Wilfrid's Church is mainly thirteenth and fourteenth century. Many alterations have, however, occurred since. The nave and tower were rebuilt in 1763 re-using old stone and the work is commemorated by a stone over the west door inscribed "1763 M. Pugh, Vicar, Sam Pugh…Church Wardens". The chancel was rebuilt in 1835 and the whole church restored in 1881. An organ chamber was added in 1888 and a new vestry in 1962. (7)
