Full Description

Site of old Gunthorpe Toll Bridge. (1)
In 1875 Gunthorpe found a new importance … with the building of an iron toll bridge. (2)
In 1869 a company was formed to build a bridge. The demolition of the Old Trent Bridge at Nottingham provided the sandstone for the abutments. The foundation stone was laid on 16/05/1873. The timber piers were completed in 1874 (with iron parts added later). On 18/06/1875 the bridge was officially opened. In 1903 the timber piers were replaced by ironwork at a cost of £884. This bridge continued in use until 1927 when the present bridge was built. (3)
Grid ref centred.
See M1960 for 1927 bridge, M5472 for earlier ferry.
