Full Description

From evidence presented by GF Turton, 1973: On the N side (of Verge Wood), in the wood, are remains of earthworks, which, in the time of Elizabeth I, formed a dam for a bloomery - water power used for the bellows. (1)
There is sound evidence that, at the bottom of 121 Kimberley Road, Nuthall, there is a "bloomery" stretching under the old Temple Park Wall into Verge Wood. As the wall was built c 1760, this "bloomery" may even be Elizabethan. The foundations in my garden side were exposed in the 1960s and samples of slag and iron ore have been sent to M Bishop. (2)
