Full Description
In the park of Strelley Hall is an extensive area surrounded by a moat. (1
A modern ornamental fishpond at Strelley. (2)
This is a water-filled homestead moat - not an ornamental pond. It remains in excellent condition; there is no evidence of a former building on the island which is now under pasture. (3)
Moat surrounding a rectangular platform approx 35m x 20m, apparently causeway entrance on NE side. Rectangular fishpond to E. Well preserved, still wet. On boundary of Strelley Hall grounds. (4) (5)
Moat and associated fishpond at Strelley - a further fishpond appears to have existed to the east, on the site of Nelson Cottage and The Kennels, but this does not survive sufficiently well to be included in the scheduling.
The moat is roughly square and includes a central platform measuring c35 m x 30 m surrounded by a 2 m deep ditch varying between 10-15 m wide. The ditch is crossed by a 10 m wide causeway at the NE corner and its sides are brick-revetted. The stone-revetted fishpond is situated 15 m to the east and is c50 m long x 12 m wide.
The moat is believed either to have functioned as a fishpond or to have been the site of a medieval manor house of the Strelley family. The brick and stone revetment of the moat and fishpond appears to date to the post-medieval period and indicates that the abandoned site was later re-used as a water feature within Strelley Park. (6)
