Full Description

C19. Very long lofty red brick railway viaduct on a curve. 45 round headed arches on piers. Two houses were later added beneath two of the arches, but they are ruinous. Length 580 yards. (1)
Awsworth railway viaduct, brick built, now demolished. (2)
The remarkable brick viaduct at Awsworth … carried a line over the Gilt Brook. It will have to go. (3)
Close to Awsworth was the Giltbrook viaduct (built 1873-1875), known as "40 bridges", over the Giltbrook valley. It was in a gently S-curve shape. It was scheduled for preservation after the Pinxton branch had been closed in 1964, but its site was required for the building of the new A610 bypass road. It was therefore demolished in the spring and summer of 1973, and the rubble from the viaduct was used as hardcore filling for the road construction. (4)
Grid ref for NW end, in Eastwood parish.
