A quarry (SK 492 493 GCE) is situated 150m due north of the Carthusian charterhouse of Beauvale (SK 44 NE 7). The remains lie in Abbey Wood on a south facing hillslope in dense coniferous woodland.
The area appears to have been afforested in the 1960s prior to which it was given over to rough pasture (1a, 1b). The quarry overlies Permo-Triassic Lower Magnesian Limestone (1c).
The quarry face was worked into the hillslope to create a vertical face around 5m in height, a bank of waste material runs along the top of the quarry face. The workings cover an area of about 140m x 50m.
In the quarry face the strata towards the surface were more finely bedded and fractured while the strata at the base were more thickly bedded. Fresher looking exposures along this face are indicative of more recent casual workings. Spoil from the quarries was tipped southwards down the slope to create a series of linear tips. On the eastern side of the entrance is a almost circular mound 32m in diameter, the level area on the summit is no more than 4m in diameter. A number of over grown terraces to the south of the quarry mark former tracks to the quarry. No other areas of stone quarrying or working are visible on aerial photographs of the area.

Quarries are notoriously difficult to date from their physical
remains alone. Although it may be tempting to link this quarry with the construction of the charterhouse (SK 44 NE 7) no definitive proof may be found. In the foundation charter Sir Nicholas Cantelupe gave the priory the right to quarry stone in his demesnes (1d). However other outcrops and quarries (not investigated) also lie within a half kilometre of the priory. (1)
