Full Description

A little more than a mile down the Erewash valley from Kirkby in Ashfield Church [SK 49025581] stands the ruins of the great house known as 'Langton'. It was granted by the Stotevilles (temp. Hen. III) to the Ruddingtons, and from them to Geoffrey De Langton who had it on seisin, 34 Hen. III (1250), while in 1515 Cuthbert Langton conveyed it to Christopher Fitzrandolph on his marriage to Jean Langton" (1)

Langton Hall alias Westwood - an ancient house within Kirkeby [Bonser (1) agrees with the information in this edition of Thoroton in which dating errors are corrected by Throsby] (2)

The house became extensively dilapidated after 1939 but in recent years has been partly restored. The ancient part is of C17 date with extensions to the S of C18 and to the N of C19. The only remains of an ancient house now visible externally form the middle part of the E wall of the Hall. The walling is of roughly coursed stone, 2 storeys high, with a stone tiled roof. The ground floor has 2 mullioned windows with drip-courses over them. (3) (4)

Named 'Langton Hall' (5).

The only remains of an ancient house now visible externally form the middle part of the east wall of the Hall. The walling is of roughly coursed stone, two storeys high, with a stone-tiled roof. The ground floor has two mullioned windows with drip-courses over them. The remainder of the house is modern and partly ruinous but is being restored by the owner. A 19thc. Stone addition on the north is being demolished. Internally the ancient portion can be traced as thick stone walling forming a rectangular building with a probable two-storied porch on its west front completely obscured by later additions. The old building may be accepted as of the 17th c. date. (4)
