Building record M2551 - Wansley Hall, Selston

Summary

HOUSE (Medieval to Mid-20th Century).Ruined remains of a Medieval manor house, thought to date from 1200. Wansley Hall was last used as a farm holding and was finally abandoned in 1960, after a serious fall of masonry and roofing. The building is T-shaped in plan and built of local sandstone and brick. Earthworks around the house suggest the existence of buried building remains and this has been demonstrated by geophysical survey. The earthworks also include a hollow way and building platform.

Full Description

L-shaped stone building with stone slab roofs, mainly it seems C15. The windows had originally mullions; the hall is now divided into 2 storeys. (1)
Due to the collapse of part of the roof ... the hall will probably be demolished. A T shaped building of 2 storeys built in rubble masonry with stone quoins. Much of this masonry has been patched with brick and covered by stucco... In the S gable is a fragment of a stone carving, of 2 figures holding a cloth in which is a third figure, in an attitude of devotion, looking up to rays of light indicating heaven. (2) (3)
[One of] the two most interesting domestic buildings in this parish [was] … Wansley Hall (the remains of an important house of the Wandesly family, apparently mostly C15), now derelict. (4)
Named 'Wansley Hall' (5).
The house is L-shaped having a NW wing running SW-NE with thick stone walls of mediaeval date, perhaps C13 or C14 (but there is no clear evidence of date). Running SE from the SW end of the earlier wing is a hall built c 1500…upper floor inserted in the C17. (6)
A total of 20 timber slice samples were collected from the building, 14 were obtained from dismantled timbers removed from the main building in May 1985 and 6 from timbers of a panel, removed in July 1987. It wasn’t possible to obtain a date for the samples due to low t-values and very short samples. (7)

The remains of Wansley Hall, thought to date from 1200. Originally the manor house, the Hall was last used as a farm holding and was finally abandoned in 1960, after a serious fall of masonry and roofing. The building is T-shaped in plan, with the northern section, arranged on an east-west axis, containing the remains of the original hall. The ruined hall stands 2 storeys high and is built of local sandstone. The remains of a 16th century fireback and an 18th century oven survive within. The southern section runs north-south and comprises a mix of architectural styles from the 16th to the 19th centuries. It is built partly of local sandstone and partly of brick.

A series of earthworks north and west of the hall suggest the location of buried remains and a geophysical survey has demonstrated the existence of further building remains south-west of the hall. A gully, interpreted as a hollow way, runs north of the site and a building platform and a well lie to the west. Documentary sources indicate that a private chapel once existed on, or adjacent to, the site of the Hall but its precise location is unknown. Listed and scheduled. (7)
Remains consolidated 1987-8, surveys carried out. See M2488 - Chapel Field, M2423- deserted village.
