Full Description

DEMOLISHED 1966. (8, 9)
Thought to have been a sub-priory of Newstead (not substantiated). (1)
Documentary evidence from 1240. Earl of Shrewsbury bought the manor in 1517. Cardinal Wolsey stayed here, --/11/1530. Sir Charles Cavendish had it in C16, his son William may have made the loopholes in the enclosing wall for defence during the civil war. With regard to the walling and buildings that remain, the oldest part seems to date only from the Tudor period ... Some effort has been made to identify a chapel (without proof). W Stevenson suggests the house was built during the Wars of the Roses, the latest part of the original buildings being the upper floor, added c 1520. (2)
That part of Kirkby Hardwick now in ruins dates from the time of Edward VI. The enclosing wall was loopholed for defence during the Civil War, while the later part of the house, built in 1672, was modernised by Henrietta, countess of Oxford, Holles and Mortimer c.1750. The old gateway (C16 or earlier) still stands (in 1939). (3)
Extensive remains of medieval buildings, partly ruined and partly converted into outbuildings etc. One more or less intact C15 (with C17 and C18 additions) 3-storey stone building remains, with 3 mullioned windows of 3 lights, with moulded drip-stones. All in very poor condition. Small C19 "Gothic" 1-storey out-building adjoins with doorway and stone dentil cornice. Ruined outbuildings have stone mullioned windows with drip-stones. A C15 stone chimney with restored crenellated capping. Slate roofs to all. (4)
Kirkby Hardwick was demolished recently. (5)
Site of house completely cleared. Only the N yard wall remains. (6)
Sections of the north yard wall still in evidence. Coursed dressed rubble with ashlar quoins and cornice. All other buildings on site are mid to late C19. (7)
In 1853 the house passed to Edmund Hodgkinson…The house was occupied by the Hodgkinsons until the beginning of the 20th century. The house was demolished in 1966. (8)
Locally Listed by Ashfield District Council (ADC Ref: 199) (10).
See M17872 for the current farm buildings.
