Full Description

Within 3 miles of Mansfield and c 2 miles SE of Bury Hill is a hill, the N side of which slopes down to a morrass through which runs Rainworth Water, a little brook dividing Mansfield and Blidworth parishes. ....2 tumuli, 35yds apart. One was "near 8yds" in diameter, the other "near 7yds". Both (tumuli) were opened by the writer to c 1.5ft below the natural surface and 6ft from the top. At this depth "a thin body" of smooth clay c 9ft long and 2ft 4in wide was found in each tumulus. On this lay ashes and burnt bones. At the N end of this clay in the E barrow 3 teeth were found. No urns were found. (1)
The rough plan by (1) shows these 2 barrows immediately N of the supposed "camp". (Suggests this is sited at M2559, with barrows, now destroyed, some way to N at SK 55475594). (4)
NB Rooke's description (1) used to give approx grid ref, as above. OS use grid refs of earthworks discovered by Oswald, and describes these as hollow ways.
See M2559, L2577 for earthworks to W, identified with this site.
See L9089 for 'camp' earthworks.
