Full Description

Monk's Well (Newstead Abbey). (1)
At the N end of the stew pond is St Mary's Well, more commonly known as the Wishing Well. (2)
There are Med refs to St Mary's Well and also to "Le Spryngg" which is probably the same site. Monk's Well has been so named for many years - probably identifiable with Med refs but not certainly. (3)
Monk's Well is a square spring fed well, c 2m deep, formed in rubble masonry with slabs of worked stone forming a top flush with the ground. There is no certain evidence of its being a Med structure. (4)
See M8939 for Med Priory, M8293 for Abbey House.
