Full Description

Monument (1)
Boatswain's (Byron's dog) Monument - a stone pedestal rising from circular steps and surmounted by an urn. (2)
In 1808 [the sixth Lord] Byron buried his dog Boatswain; his neat classical monument stands sacrilegiously near the high altar of the old church. (3)
This monument is to Bryron's dog; born in New Foundland May 1803, died at Newstead 1808. The top urn is of marble. There are plain marble panels on three sides, with an inscription on the east side in praise of the dog, who Byron considered his only true friend. (4)
See M2565 for abbey and M8293 for house.
