Full Description

Trapezoid enclosure with internal markings, wide ditches. Double ditched linear features to S. (1) (2) (3)
We examined an obvious earthwork in a field NW of the farm buildings … The feature was a broad ditch system, quadrilateral in shape and in low lying ground. For many years the earthwork lay beneath the mill dam of Cotton Mill Farm. No structures were found in our limited trenching but a considerable depth of peaty deposit led us to speculate that the hollows were the remains of fishponds. A test pit dug at the highest point of the interior yielded only the stratified layers thrown up in creating the outer ditch. No bridge abutment or entrance was detectable and we concluded that the site was a stock enclosure or a fishery, or both. (5)
Survives as an earthwork. (6)
Morph: 43.2.1-3 Group Interpretation: Unknown Medieval Moat. 43.2.1: Unknown Medieval Moat. 43.2.2: Unknown Medieval Earthwork. 43.2.3: Unknown Medieval Ditch. 43.3.1 also on record. (7)
The pond is shown on Sanderson and is most probably the mill pond for Cotton Mill Farm. The features observed in the excavation could all have come about during the lifetime or the silting up of the pond. (8)
See M2816 for Cotton Mill, L2760 for nearby enclosure (NAR record confuses the two sites).
