Full Description

Osmanthorpe Camp. Double ditched rectangle with rounded corners. Note possible entrance on S side. (1)
A scatter of 30 coarse Ro sherds found on high ground at SK 678563. (2)
Approx findspot of pottery confirmed by Mr March; the area is now under deep plough. 2 fragments of C3-C4 grey ware were found during perambulation. (3)
Cropmarks of 3 sides of large double-ditched vexillation fortress, enclosing the top and the N side of a hill. The distance between the inner ditches of the N and S sides is 280m, but if a gap in the S side can be taken as a gate on the axis of the fort, the E-W distance would be c 300m, and the internal area c 8Ha of 20 acres. 2 parallel cropmarks within the fort may indicate another fort. 3 ditches with overlapping ends outside the E and S sides are similar to those at the vexillation fort at Newton on Trent (Lincs). They have been interpreted as a temporary enclosure of earlier date than the fort, but there is no evidence to support this. (4)
Investigation of a ditch at the S edge of what is probably a small Ro "marching" camp has taken place. The camp is indicated by soilmarks on recent APs by Mr D Riley. The ditch, running down the W slope of a hill, was formerly some 7m deep below the field to the N, and 3m below the road to the S. The depth reduces towards the W end, where it is only c 0.5m deep. The deeper end has been gradually filled with rubbish since 1975, and some 10m or so, now fenced off, has been lost. (5)
Morph: 44.6.1-3: Roman Fort (Group Interpretation). 44.7.1: Roman Ditch. (7)
Grid ref centred. See M 2766, L 2767 for sections across possible Ro road and finds.
