Full Description
A band of gravel runs through 5 adjoining fields, for about 3/4 mile NW-SE, on the N side of Low Road from Southwell to Kirklington/Edingley. In association with this gravel band there is a surface scatter of Ro pottery, which includes 35 sherds of samian, 12 sherds Derbys ware, 7 of mortaria, and 200 sherds of various other coarse wares. In addition a brooch of C1-2 has been found. This is presumably part of a Ro road running NW from AD PONTEM. (1)
Nothing relating to this site can be seen on the available APs. (2)
During perambulation within the indicated area over 20 sherds of Ro pottery were picked up (predominantly C3/C4). The main concentration was centred to SK 68345601 in which area was also found 3 fragments of Ro tile and a single portion of probable Ro brick. Topographically the site is elevated with an open aspect, good drainage - almost certainly indicates the close proximity of a substantial Ro building with possibly minor adjacent occupation; the earlier finds of samian suggest status. The "band of gravel" cannot be identified although the major portion of the indicated area is now under plough; similarly an early road was not traced. (3)
