Full Description

Another ancient work, in a field called Lovely Grange, not far from Oxton, and c half a mile E of Old Ox. The ditch and vallum are plainly to be distinguished on the N side and W end; but very little traces of them remain on the other sides. The length is 314yds by 67. It is situated on the side of a hill, within 200yds of the top, where there is an extensive view. (1)
Lovell, or Lovelley Grange, belonging to the monastery of Welbeck, was granted to Sir William Newenham. (2)
Tithe Map of 1843 shows a "Grange Field" here, and an enclosure called "Old Orchard", in which was Grange Field House, and is very similar in size and shape to the enclosure shown by Rooke. (3)
Calls the site "Lonely Grange" and places it at Grange Field Farm. (4)
The former Grangefield Farm was identified as the present Fallows Farm. The tenant had no knowledge of place name or earthworks. Extensive perambulation of the area noted by (1) was negative. (5)
Nothing resembling this earthwork visible on available APs. (6)
