Full Description

Holbeck in Westhorpe listed in "villages now lost but linked with another village in 1334 tax list" (sited to Holbeck Farm in Southwell, but note name Westhorpe at SK 688535). (1)
Deserted village of Holbeck - SK 658507 (?). (2)
No evidence of a DMV visible on the available APs at either SK 656525 or SK 688535. (3) (4)
Neither Holbeck Farm (SK 65655251) nor New Holbeck (SK 65655320) show adjacent surface evidence of desertion. Westhorpe is now an active outlying district to Southwell. (5)
Fieldwalking around Holbeck Farm on the site of Holbeck deserted Medieval village (SK 656 525) produced sherds of C13 to C15 wares. Ttrial excavation to the W of the site in advance of minor building works revealed no archaeological features below the present topsoil, although geophysical survey elsewhere on the site has indicated features of possible interest. (6)
