Mill mentioned in 1288 - held of the King (may not be this one - see (4)). A C18 ballad is the source of the legend of the miller giving lodging to King Henry II. A 1787 painting shows the mill being a substantial building. (3)
In 1288 Jordan de Sutton held 10 acres at Sutton Schawe "where his mill used to be". In 1471 Ralph and Richard Illingworth leased Sutton Mill from the crown. Described as being between Mansfield and Kirkby Hardwick. (4)
The reservoir was extended in 1839, drowning the site of the old mill, which was on the District boundary at approx above grid ref. (5)
King's Mill Reservoir was drained in the 1940's to retrieve a crashed aeroplane. At that time a red brick wall was revealed, possibly associated with the mill or its water supply. (6)
