Full Description
Inventory of Adam Leeke, 1596 describes the Leeke mansion. When Mr and Mrs Shaw were levelling ground for a lawn and garden (at Halam House Farm), they came upon what could have been a paved way seeming to lead to a raised rectangular area of 100ft by 120ft. From Mr Shaw's preliminary investigations in one or two places this rectangle appeared to be surrounded by a brick wall some three feet in thickness, the size of the bricks being 9.5 x 4.5 x 2.5in. All this is about one foot below the present surface. Mrs Smith can remember as a child, seeing large squared stones turned up out of the ground in this area. (1)
The owner (of the dovecote) Mr Ricketts stated that on his neighbour Mr Shaw's property were the foundations of the "Old Hall" which were frequently uncovered during farming operations. Mr Shaw indicated low mounds and generally disturbed ground at above grid ref marking the site of the former house. Research at Nottm City Reference Library was negative re this building. (2)
Smaller terraced platforms survive at Halam House Farm. (3)
See M5498 for nearby dovecote.
