Full Description

Various APs show star-shaped Civil War fort 1.5 miles NW of Newark, partly ploughed away. Best photo is LI 52. Also cannon mound in NE corner, on line of Old North Road. Covered bridge which was at different angle to present one. (1) (2)
A quadrilateral shaped earthwork surrounded by a ditch about 6ft deep. 2 gun emplacements to the NW and NE corners commanding the crossing of the River Trent, also bastions at SW and SE, and this earthwork formed part of the Royalist defence of Newark. The N road passed through the fort which shows within it part of the bridge abutment. (3)
A slight, but well preserved, Civil War earthwork. (4)
The feature has survived as surveyed in 1962 save that the natural scarp portrayed to the NW has been removed. The traffic ruts have also gone, and no trace of an old bridge could be seen in either bank of the river. (5)
Site is clipped by a roadway and rubbish tip on the S and SE sides. The original passage into the fort is damaged since the 1964 RCHM survey (monument No 3). (6)
The sconce is a slight earthwork with a max height of 1m in ancient pasture. (7)
Fort earthworks. (10)
