Full Description

"Red Lodge" or "Stoke Lodge" is shown on Clampe's plan by a drawing of a house and survives as an earthwork, which has in the past been mistaken for a Civil War fort. The site lies 160ft N of the "Sconce" adjacent to the Kelham Road, and is marked by a rectangular platform, 125ft by 100ft, with the long axis NW-SE, surrounded by a ditch 15ft wide and 2ft deep. At the E corner of the platform the site of the house, a rectangular building 60ft by 35ft, is marked by debris overgrown by nettles. Ditch on the SE is distorted and enlarged by an old field boundary and a hollowed track. (1)
The above work is now within a restricted area and cannot be visited. As far as can be seen from the road it is extant and undisturbed. (3)
The site is now under standing corn and only visible as a slight rise in the crop. (4)
Morph 194.11.1 enclosure. (6)
Earthwork enclosure. (7)
See M3033 for nearby Civil War redoubt. Was SAM 25.
