Full Description

"Sconce" at Stoke Lodge, earthwork, is in fact a flanked redoubt and is described by Clampe as a "flanked redoubt of the Scots by the Red Lodge"; it lies 250ft S of the Kelham road on the N bank of the Old Trent Dyke. The site is on flat pasture land with a clear view towards both Newark and Kelham. The fort survives as a square embanked enclosure, 140ft across excluding the ditch (surviving on NW and NE sides only). Both bank and ditch are of low relief. Demi-bastions at the N and E angles flank the NW and NE sides respectively; there are no demi bastions on the other 2 angles. (2)
The above work is now within a restricted area and cannot be visited. As far as can be seen from the road to the N it is extant and undisturbed. (4)
The redoubt still shows as described, in pasture field. (5)
Morph: 194.12.1 Fort. (6)
Earthwork. (7)
See M3032 for Red Lodge, site of house. Was SAM 25.
