Full Description

A star shaped raised platform, rising to c 15ft in the centre. Traces of ditch surrounding it have been almost totally obliterated. It appears to approx coincide with a "work of the Scots" on plan, (1). (2)
This earthwork stands to a max height of 2.0m. (3)
Sandhills Sconce, earthwork ... lies NW of Tolney Lane, 1150yds SW of Trent Bridge, Newark. Although both contemporary plans show it as a Scottish fort it may be the work known as "Sandy Fort" which was taken by the Scots in April 1646. The work survives as an irregular mound, mainly natural but still retaining slight traces of adaption as a fort. (4)
A small sconce. There are minor non-surveyable indications of a ditch adjacent to the SW face but whether this was contemporary with the original Royalist fort or formed part of the Scots adaption cannot now be stated. The topographical situation is low lying with good all round visibility but negative defensive qualities. Cannon from this position could cover the River Trent to the S. (5)
A 4 pointed star sconce of small dimensions - very rounded in its form, but basic plan can still be recognised. Recent trench (2 months old) cut into W indent between star bastions. (6)
Morph: 194.15.1 Fort. (7)
