Full Description

Redoubt, earthwork, 180ft E of the present Great N Road, lies in a flat meadow on the N bank of a brook immediately NE of the pavillion in the Brewery Sports Ground. It is a square embanked enclosure, the side measuring 55ft along the centre of the bank, with traces of an external ditch on the N and W. A ditch may have existed on the E but this side is obscured by a modern field boundary; there was probably no ditch on the S side facing the brook. At the SW angle the bank was widened internally to form a square platform; this angle pointed across the approach from Newark along the old Great N Road. Clampe shows a cannon in one corner (orientation seems wrong) and entrance on the N side. (1)
A Parliamentary redoubt shown on contemporary maps consisting of a banked enclosure, 55ft square. (2)
The remains of a Civil War redoubt now under rough pasture but obviously farmed over for many years. In plan the work is a subrectangular enclosure covering c 1/5 acre; structurally it now consists of a single rampart with, in places, an accompanying ditch. In the SW corner of the enclosure is a raised platform (doubtless for a single canon). Topographically the work is situate on a low lying plain with excellent all round visibility and commanding of the Newark line of march. (3)
Redoubt earthwork situated in the SE corner of a flat field with traces of an external ditch on the N and W sides. The stream providing the defence for S side, and the field boundary obscuring the ditch on the E side. (4)
