Full Description
Before 1770 (the road from Newark to Muskham Bridge) followed a winding course. The old route, which is shown on the contemporary plans and can still be traced on the ground by traffic ruts, left Newark W of the modern road and then turned N, crossing the present road and continuing E of it ... to reach the parish boundary between Newark and S Muskham; it then ran NW along the present Crankley Lane and parish boundary to a point W of the modern road where it again turned N to cross the NW branch of the Trent some 115yds above the present bridge. Thence, as shown by Ogilby, it continued N through the villages of South and North Muskham. (1)
