Full Description

The Pipe Rolls for the year 1169 record expenditure "for work on the bridge of Neworc" (many refs for repairs etc). (1)
A contract between the Bishop of Lincoln and Edward Downes, drawn up in 1485, from which it appears that the bridge was to be largely of oak, both piers and parapets, and most of the stonework in its making was to go to the provision of defences at its either end. How rapidly such bridges need renovation is shown by the grant for the purpose only a century later of 60 oaks by Queen Elizabeth. (2)
Trent Bridge, Newark shown on Chapman and Sanderson. (3) (4)
Road bridge, 1775, of limestone ashlar and brickwork. Widened 1848-9. Features cast iron hand rail and commemorative panel with overhead lamps. See NIAR archive file for detailed description. (5)
Built in 1775 by Stephen Wright. Footways and railings dated 1848. (6)
The earliest bridge on this site dates back to 1135, but the present structure … was erected in 1775. (7)
The Dukes of Newcastle [who] leased the manor of Newark after the Restoration, eventually purchasing it outright in 1836…commissioned the reconstruction of the Trent Bridge in 1775 and the widening of Castle Gate soon after. These developments had a transformative effect on the town. The new Trent Bridge replaced the smaller, 15th-century bridge erected by Bishop John Chadworth. The bridge was altered in 1848, widening the deck to allow pedestrian traffic and to add the lamp standards and railings. (8)
See M3215 for toll house.
