Full Description

Large warehouse, late C18, well lit from plenty of windows. Has had some extensions and alterations. Was in use as a cafe. In reasonable condition but disused. See NIAR archive file for detailed description. (1)
Former warehouse, now disused cafe. Early C18. (2)
Constructed before 1790, probably in 1787-8, just as Newark’s river trade was beginning to prosper. It is the only known purpose built warehouse from the important period in Newark’s history to survive. It marked the boundary between a private commercial yard and a public wharf and, having a full carriage bay, would have served as a gateway building to that yard. The building also served as a warehouse facility in its own right. Placed as it was, near the wharf and close by the Great North Road and the Fosseway, it could take goods from waggons or Trent ketches or dispatch goods. It was commissioned by the Handleys, father and son. The building continued in commercial use throughout the C19 with little alteration other than the strengthening of the floor with cast iron columns and the insertion of a staircase. In 1943-5 the building was converted for use as a café and the building was expanded on the north side. (3)
The surviving section of a large late 18th century warehouse range now rendered. Limited evidence survives of 17th-century brick in the lower parts of the structure, but this is not conclusive enough to establish an earlier construction date. The building was part of a much larger U-shaped arrangement of warehouses which fronted the river. This was sited roughly in the location of the circular extension on the building’s west side. The building was successively altered during the 19th century to incorporate cast-iron support columns, and later in 1934 it was converted to a café. The circular extension was added after 1996.
