Full Description
The Old Lock House - former lock keeper's cottage, 1773. Altered and extended after the flood of 1875. Colourwashed brick with stone dressings and gabled and hipped roofs with 3 brick gable stacks. (1)
NIAR says this one (the E one) is 1840s, 03066 is 1772. (2)
Does not appear on the Newark map of 1820 but is on the map of 1829. Therefore clearly dates to the 1820s (29/04/2004). (3)
Late 18th-century residence for the keeper of the Town Lock, now used as holiday apartments. Unlike many of the other buildings along the riverfront the lock keeper’s cottage is orientated to face the river and the Town Lock. The building was extended after 1875 to add two wings to either side of the main building, each with bay windows at ground floor level. This is the oldest of three lock-keeper’s houses which were constructed to service the Town Lock, all of which still exist. (4)
