Full Description

In the very near future a men's stocking factory, on the Main Street near the bottom of Chapel Lane will be opened by I and R Morleys. The factory will employ only lady workers who will operate the special circular Griswell machines … Thomas Hill of I and R Morleys will be appointed manager of the factory. (1)
This factory was in fact built and stands as described, set back from Main Street on the S side, behind a coal merchants in a relatively new row of houses, extending up from, i.e. above the level of the street. The factory is two storey and appears to have been disused for some years. It is brick built and has large windows, 4 on its S-facing gable end wall (2 upstairs, 2 down) and 6 on the W-facing wall (3 upstairs and 3 down). The door is also on this wall downstairs. These windows occupy a great proportion of the wall space, as one would expect. However there are no windows on the N-facing gable end wall or on the E-facing wall. (2)
