Full Description
"The Mills of Master Sutton" are shown on a map in the British Library, dated stylistically to 1500-1540. The mills lie on a leet, and there is a weir in the Trent to divert water into the leet (see also Averham weir, L3480). The Suttons were accused of diverting the river to power their mills. The weir is shown with a gap in it, which would allow it to act as a flash lock, by closing the gap with paddles. (1)
