Full Description
An antique stone ... found (--/12/1789) in the parish of Thorpe, about 3 miles and a quarter from Newark, by the side of the Foss-road ... It stood in an upright position, about 2 feet and a half beneath the surface of the ground, placed upon another stone about the same size (decayed wood, bones and mortared bricks also found). Near the place where this stone was found, is an old inclosure, called Deadman's Grave. (1)
Sculpture in oolitic limestone, in the form of a pair of arched niches, with a figure of a deity in each - one male, one female. (descriprion and photo). Description of discovery suggests a shrine. (2)
