Full Description

The brick bridge carrying the Fosse Way across the river Devon at the southern end of Newark, now called Devon Bridge, was formerly known as Markham Bridge. In 1597 Queen Elizabeth granted "fortie (timber trees) for Markehall (Markham) Bridge". (1)
The Devon was crossed ... near Farndon where the Morkerbrigge carried the Fosseway into Newark, as it still does. (2)
Devon Bridge (3) (4) (5)
Bridge carrying a main road over the River Devon. Twin Span modern concrete structure. (6)
During recent work on that bridge, timbers were seen in the river which may have been the remains of an earlier bridge (pers com J Matthews). … The excavated trenches have shown that the area between the Fosse Way and the River Trent had been marshy ground before modern dumping raised the ground level. The suggested derivation of the name Markham Bridge as connected with marshland has been confirmed. (7)
