Full Description

Flour mill, with pump and 2 sluices. (1)
The large watermill which was burnt down in 1965 is on the site of Newark's ancient water power site which has been in existence for a variety of uses since before Med times for cornmilling, fulling, powdermilling. The existing remains in brick and stone are the foundations and wheelpits of a C19 corn mill with evidence of 3 wheels to be seen, the largest of which appears to have been 15ft in diameter and 21ft in length. (2) Evidence of 5 watercourses passing beneath the mill. See archive file for details. Earliest map appearance 1790. (3)
In 1790 a cotton mill was built at the old mill site by the river at the end of Mill Lane. It was 5 storeys high, in brick, 15 irregular bays long and 3 bays wide with single storey extensions at either end. There is evidence of 3 waterwheels. Parnhams moved here in 1886 when their steam mill burnt down. (4)
