Full Description

3 sides of long rectangular enclosure ? (1)
Some 200m to the S (of 03607) is a rectangular mark partly obscured by a housing estate. A scatter of building debris including modern brick was seen, and the farmer said he has ploughed up the remains of a stone track between there and the Winthorpe Road. It seems that this mark is modern. (2)
Morph: 201.9.1 long barrow. (4)
Trial trench. The plans show two fairly linear ditches c. 2m wide, roughly SW - NE aligned and loosely parallel. These most probably represent the enclosure ditches recorded as cropmarks. Unfortunately, the report is missing the narrative description. (5) (6)
Area excavation. Sub rectangular enclosure tentatively identified as a Neolithic mortuary enclosure. In sections B and C the ditch was a single cut and fill. The other four sections indicate the ditch was recut with a smaller and shallower ditch. No artefacts were recovered … Re-use of prehistoric burial sites in the Saxon period is well attested and it must remain a possibility here. (7) (8)
See M18359 for high status Saxon burial within this enclosure.
