Civil War battle site. (1)
Sir John Meldrum's Parliamentarian forces, on Beacon Hill, laying siege to Newark, were surprised by Prince Rupert's army on 21/03/1644. The Norfolk Redcoats (a Parliamentarian regiment) mutinied and Meldrum was forced to sound a parley. He was allowed to take away the remains of his army but had to surrender all his artillery, muskets and ammunition. (2)
Area of skirmish now under modern development. (3)
